The Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford recently launched a new Jewish Free Loan Fund which provides interest-free loans to help members of Greater Hartford’s Jewish community overcome financial hurdles and seize new opportunities with dignity and confidentiality.

This initiative has roots in history as well as in our community’s response to the challenges of the past year. This program will introduce the new fund and explore the historical roots of free loan funds and credit cooperatives (known as aktsiyes or “oxies”) in the Jewish community. Prof. Shelley Tenenbaum of Clark University will speak about the broader significance of Jewish loan associations, and community members will share some recollections of the Kief Protective Mutual Benefit Association which continues to operate today. Ann Pava, chair of the Jewish Free Loan Fund, will talk about the new fund and how it functions in our community today.
