Greater Hartford Celebrates Israel at 70

WEST HARTFORD, CONN. (March 6, 2018) – Greater Hartford’s Jewish community is excited to commemorate the State of Israel’s 70th birthday with a year of celebrations, cultural activities and educational programs.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford and the Mandell Jewish Community Center are spearheading the community effort with generous support from the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford and the Federation. All Jewish nonprofit organizations, schools and synagogues across the region have been invited to participate by planning their own activities for the public.

“Our community’s Israel@70 celebrations will commemorate and promote the achievements of Israel and its people, arts, culture, technologies and industries,” said Melvin Simon, an attorney and West Hartford resident who is chairing the initiative. “For those who witnessed the birth and development of the State of Israel, it’s a chance to reflect on the challenges overcome and celebrate the 70th anniversary of Israel’s independence. For those much younger, it will be a chance to learn about Israel’s contributions to our world today.”

Family-friendly activities will include the 2018 Israel Festival, which will take place April 15 to 22, and a giant community celebration on June 3 at the Mandell JCC. Film buffs will enjoy a special "Israel through Film" day with the Hartford Jewish Film Festival on March 18 at the Hoyts Cinemas Simsbury, and music lovers won't want to miss concerts by the Shir Ba'Emek singing ensemble from Greater Hartford’s sister city of Afula on May 1 and Israeli rock pioneer Micha Biton during the week of June 3. These and many other activities will take place at a variety of locations across Greater Hartford.
