Michele K. Troy, an English professor at the University of Hartford, will speak about her book, Strange Bird: The Albatross Press and the Third Reich, on Tuesday, May 22nd at 7 p.m. at the Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation, 55 Bushy Hill Road, Simsbury. This free event is sponsored by the Sisterhood and Couples Book Groups and is open to the community.
Albatross Press, a precursor of the Penguin publishing house in Germany, was Europe’s largest publisher of American and British literature and distributed works by modern authors such as D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, and Ernest Hemingway. Even though Albatross was funded by British-Jewish interests, it was tolerated by the Nazi regime for both economic and propaganda gains. This skillfully researched book has been described as a “fascinating story that grips the reader like a novel.”
