R. Derek Black, author of "The Klanman's Son: My Journey from White Nationalism to Antiracism" grew up in the Ku Klux Klan and was raised to take over the movement. While attending college, they had a personal reckoning and publicly denounced White nationalism and apologized for their actions. Disowned by their family, Black disappeared into academia. But in 2016, as they watched the rise of Donald Trump and recognized the language and arguments of his former life, they knew that they couldn’t stay silent. This thoughtful and insightful memoir explores how people change deeply held beliefs and gives important lessons for our contentious times.
