Securing the Hartford Symphony Orchestra for Opening Night is a true coup — merging world-class artistry with local pride. Their live performance of iconic Jewish film soundtracks, paired with projected scenes from those very movies, transforms the evening into a full sensory celebration and sets a tone of grandeur and unity for the festival ahead.
Capping the night is the 30-minute short Fiddler on the Moon: Judaism in Space, a whimsical yet profound documentary featuring Neil deGrasse Tyson, astronauts Jeffrey Hoffman and Jessica Meir, and leading rabbis and scholars exploring how Jewish ritual might evolve beyond Earth. A hit on the festival circuit, it won the Audience Award for Best Documentary Short at the Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival and was nominated for the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Short Documentary — proving that even in zero gravity, Jewish humor and wonder still rise to the top.
