Join us for an illustrated Zoom talk with Frank Himmelstein, whose family has been farming in Lebanon for 110 years. Established in 1913, the Himmelstein Homestead Farm is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, Jewish family farm in the state. It was a dairy farm until 2004, and now sells vegetables directly to local consumers and at food coops, local schools, and restaurants. The farm was permanently preserved through Connecticut’s Farmland Preservation Program to ensure its prime farmland will always be used for farming. Just like two generations of family members before him, Himmelstein cares for the land and grows a variety of crops that help feed the community. Frank went to college to study agronomy and earned a PhD in plant and soil sciences. He worked at the University of Connecticut for many years as the Extension Educator in Integrated Crop Management. He has worked to preserve the farm and its history forever.
