Women's Philanthropy

Women’s giving in the Federation system is the fastest growing component of the Annual Campaign. Nationally, women’s gifts represent nearly 25 percent of the total funds raised in annual Federation campaigns.

In Greater Hartford, women’s giving tops that number at nearly 30 percent of the Annual Campaign.

Why a Woman’s Gift?

Starting in the 1990s, women began shedding the role of volunteer and wearing the mantle of philanthropist. Women also give from the heart—half of women feel giving is a moral imperative, resulting in the growing interest in women’s endowment and venture philanthropist funds.

By giving a gift in her own name, a woman:

  • Defines herself as a role model to emulate, especially to her children;
  • Establishes her own identity separate from her spouse or other family members;
  • Maintains a voice and credibility as policy-setter and decision-maker; and
  • Increases the number of contributors affecting political power.

Make a woman's gift now.

Connecting to Women’s Philanthropy

Women’s Philanthropy is a sisterhood for women of all ages, backgrounds, interests, lifestyles and income levels. Working together as partners, women can achieve much more than any one can do alone.

Pomegranate Society

The Pomegranate Society has been created for women making an individual minimum gift of $1,800 to the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford’s Annual Campaign.

One of the seven fruits named in the Bible, the pomegranate is said to contain 613 seeds, one for each of the mitzvot or commandments found in the Torah. The ancient symbol was carved in the entranceways of the earliest synagogues, woven into fabrics, and hammered into silver and gold. The intricate covers for the handles of the Torah scrolls are called “rimonim” or pomegranates.

Each woman making a $1,800 annual commitment may purchase the beautiful sterling silver pin for $150. By wearing this symbol, we are reminded of the Jewish lives we have improved, rescued and renewed. But, even more, it reminds us of the work that is yet to be done.

Pomegranate women will attend special events for their society.

Lion of Judah

The Lion of Judah program recognizes women who make generous individual gifts at the $5,000 level and above to the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford’s Annual Campaign.

Lions attend exclusive events such the annual Lion of Judah Luncheon and the International Lion of Judah Conference, and are encouraged to wear the internationally recognized Lion of Judah pin with pride.  The stunning Lion of Judah pin represents sisterhood and connectedness, leadership and power, and is enhanced further as women continue or increase their giving levels.

When you become a Lion, you have a unique opportunity to secure our Jewish future, to forge new opportunities for creative philanthropy, and to influence the global agenda with the Jewish values of compassion and loving kindness.

Events

Women’s Philanthropy holds numerous events throughout the year, some of which are fundraising and some are purely educational.
