Every gift tells a story of love and hope

Even during the most difficult economic times, when our highest priority is helping people in need and in crisis, the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford continues to strengthen, enrich and celebrate Jewish life.

Federation gives us all the ability to shine as individuals and as a community by providing opportunities that make an immediate, lasting impact on our Jewish faith, values and legacy.

Your gift to the Annual Campaign ensures that no matter what the state of the economy, your Jewish community, through education, heritage and social commitment, will be there for your children and your children’s children.

IRA Charitable Rollover -- DEADLINE:  DECEMBER 31, 2011 at MIDNIGHT
The House passed the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010 and President Obama signed it into law. It restores the IRA Charitable Rollover and permits its use in all of 2011.

Individuals age 70½ and older may make distributions in any amount up to $100,000 per year from their IRAs to their favorite charities, free from income tax.

Certain limitations apply:
-- Only distributions from regular and Roth IRAs qualify
-- The recipient must be a public charity
-- IRA distributions may not be made to a donor advised fund, supporting foundation or private foundation
-- IRA gifts to charitable remainder trusts or in exchange for charitable gift annuities are not permitted

The transfer does qualify for the required minimum distribution. The transfer is made directly from a trustee to the charitable organization.

IMPORTANT: Individuals who choose to make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from their IRA trustee to a charity have until December 31, 2011 to take advantage of opportunity.

It is important to remember that in order to have a qualified charitable distribution under the IRA Charitable Rollover provisions, the distribution must go directly from the IRA custodian to the charity. Also remember that donor advised funds, supporting organizations and private foundations, are not qualified charities for purposes of the rollover.

Please consider taking advantage of the IRA Charitable Rollover to make or add to your Annual Campaign gift or to create an endowment that will make a gift to the Annual Campaign every year in perpetuity.
